U.S. Machine Cancel Identifier -- Potter/Vail Herringbone
The Potter and Vail machine was experimental in nature, and is quite rare. They are seen from only a few smaller towns in Illinois, from 1898 to 1900. This herringbone pattern cancel has been seen with both oval and rectilinear postmarks.
