Introduction
I have tried to take low-light and nighttime photos for many years. Film had ISO limits, and flash only worked in very limited situations.
The big breakthrough for me came in the form of improved sensors in digital cameras. The Nikon D700 really helped me to take more low-light images. The Panasonic Lumix GX-85 finished the job. On a recent cruise, I was able to take great photos at night in various ports. Some of the recent and older low-light photos are showcased on this page.

Party Boat --- Taken in the harbor at Bali. This ‘pirate ship’ was cruising around the harbor while the party people drank, danced, and made a LOT of noise. This photo was taken from our cabin balcony, using the GX85. The 5-axis movement compensation made it easy to get a clear photo. You can see the individual partiers with no problem.
San Francisco Skyline --- Taken from our cruise ship in 2006. At that time, we had a nice Kodak point-and-shoot, but had to use a shutter speed of 1/4 second (the ship’s railing was the necessary brace)
Hong Kong --- The buildings were lit up this visit, much as in the past. However, now, they use vast numbers of LED’s. In the past it was neon. The building here has the time displayed over the surface of the entire building. Taken with the GX85.
Honolulu Skyline at Sunrise --- It was still night as we entered Honolulu harbor. You can see a nice skyline of highrise buildings in the dark. Unfortunately, I was unable to get a good view of Diamond Head as we entered, there are just too many buildings now. Again, taken with the Panasonic Lumix GX85.
Luna Park, Sydney, Australia --- Taken with the Nikon D700, while entering Sydney Harbour. The harbor entrance is one of the finest in the world. This is the amusement park right at the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Night Shot of Malta Harbor --- Taken with the Nikon D700, this shows the illuminated fortress walls in the harbor of Valetta, Malta. These massive defensive walls are many hundreds of years old.
Oompah Band at Restaurant in Sydney, Australia --- We enjoyed a long lunch at the Munich BrauHaus restaurant. It is located in the old section of Sydney, Australia, that is called ‘The Rocks’. This shot demonstrates what the Panasonic Lumix GX85 can do in low light.
Budapest at Night --- Taken as we were ready to leave on our river cruise from Budapest. The bridges are especially nice at night.
Slow Shutter of Cruise Ship --- Taken from our house on Maui as the ‘Pride of Hawaii’ sailed past at night. We did not have any camera capable of taking such a night shot, so the shutter was left open and the ship became a ‘smear’.
Sydney Harbor Ferry at Night --- Taken as our cruise ship entered this remarkable harbor. Again, using a more modern camera (Nikon D700) allowed me to capture the ferry boat.
