The final stage of our journey through
the Panama Canal began with leaving
Gatun Lake. Two more sets of single
locks, and we were ready to enter
the Pacific Ocean.
One of the remarkable views you get on
this leg of the journey is the Gaillard
Cut (Culebra Cut). The builders of
the Canal had to blast through stone
mountains to create the cut, not just
perform normal excavation.
In addition, the expansion of the Canal
required widening this massive stone
barrier. The expansion was completed in
2017.
