This is the image of a picture postcard that has passed through the U.S. mails illegally. The reason for this is the use of a War Savings Stamp to pay the first class postage for the card. These savings stamps were supposed to be pasted into special books that could be exchanged for War Bonds, and were invalid for postage. I find these types of covers to be fascinating.
I have some other items showing this type of usage.
Use of Revenue ("Battleship" Documentary) stamp for postage (1899)
Postage Due used for postage (1918)
Postal Stationery cutout added to new envelope
Foreign Stamp used for domestic mail (1920)
Charity Stamp used for domestic mail (1988)
Savings Stamp used for domestic mail (1961)
