I used to collect these interesting machine cancels. They were impressed by a lever-assisted device that marked mail one item at a time. Nearly all of these cancels appear to originate from small U. S. post offices around the turn of the 20th century. It is said that the "path" of the salesman for these devices clearly passes through Michigan, Iowa, and other states in that part of the U. S.
